Anesthetizing flies

1. CO2 gas: Frequently used in fly labs equiped with CO2 tanks.

2. Flynap: available from Carolina Biological Supply.

3. Ether: add a few drops of ether to a cotton ball, add the cotton to a bottle containing flies, and cover the lid. Or use with the anesthetizer (or etherizer). Caution: ether is highly flammable---don't allow open flames or electronic motors in your lab.

4. Cooling. Place vials containing files on ice for 5-10 minutes. After the flies are not moving, dump onto a chilled surface such as petri dish on top of ice.
