FUNCTION
BIOCHEMICAL ACTIVITY OF CD90
  - None
CELLULAR FUNCTION OF CD90

- In mouse may contribute to lymphocyte costimulation
- May contribute to inhibition of proliferation differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells and neuron memory formation in the CNS
DISEASE RELEVANCE OF CD90 AND FUNCTION OF CD90 IN INTACT ANIMAL

- CD90 mAb expression inhibits neurite outgrowth on mature astrocytes [Tiveron MC et al. 1992]
- CD90 mAb block memory formation in chicks in passive avoidance tasks [Feng H et al. 1993]
- CD90 knockout mice showed decreased in vivo formation of long term potentiation in the hippocampal dentate gyrus [Nosten-Bertrand M et al. 1996]
- Cross-linking of CD90 at the surface of CD90 positive hematopoietic progenitors inhibits production of primitive hematopoietic colonies [Mayani and Lansdorp 1994]**
- CD90 mAbs very useful means of identifying CD34+hematopoietic precursor cells in vitro [Craig et al. 1993] and in vivo*
- CD34+CD90+ cells include hematopoietic stem cells that can serve as autologous grafts to replace the bone marrow in patients with malignancies [Tsukamoto AS et al. 1994]*

EXPRESSION
MAIN CELLULAR EXPRESSION OF CD90

- Expressed by hematopoietic stem cells and neurons in all species studied
- Highly expressed in connective tissue and various fibroblast and stromal cell lines
- Expressed on all thymocytes and peripheral T cells in mice, but in humans expressed only on small % fetal thymocytes, 10-40% of CD34+ cells in bone marrow, and <1% of CD3+CD4+ lymphocytes in peripheral circulation
- Also expressed by human lymph node HEV endothelium but not other endothelia
- Lastly, expressed by limited number of lymphoblastoid and leukemic cell lines
AUTHOR'S ADDITIONAL INSIGHTS ON CD90

- Two allelic forms exist in humans but polymorphic site is in third intron and so does not give rise to different allelic proteins
- Both ligands and function of CD90 in the human immune system remain
- unidentified
