Weight-mole conversion for DNA and protein

Nucleotic acids

  • 1 g of 1,000 bp DNA (sodium salt) = 1.52 pmol = 9.1 x 1011 molecules

  • 1 pmol of 1,000 bp DNA (sodium salt) = 0.66 g

  • 1 g of 1,000 bp double-stranded DNA (sodium salt) = 6.6 x 105 daltons
  • 1 g of 1,000 bp single-stranded DNA (sodium salt) = 3.3 x 105 daltons
  • 1 g of 1,000 bp of single-stranded RNA (sodium salt) = 3.4 x 105 daltons

Calculations based on ammonium salt salt will be slight different.

    Average molecular weight per base-pair:

    No salt 618 Dalton
    Sodium salt 662 Dalton
    Ammonium salt 652 Dalton
    DNA and Protein

  • 1 kb of DNA = 333 amino acids of coding capacity = 37 kD
  • 10 kD = 270 bp DNA

  • 1,000 aa protein = 110 kD
